Sam Bornstein paints in the negotiation between material and image, memory and observation, reference and abstraction. Loose allusions to folklore, personal history, media, music, and film congeal into a hazy composition whose structure compels narrative, but dictates little. Luminosity arises through careful brushstrokes, often through the figures’ faces, imbuing characters with a sense of the imaginary.
